It should come as no surprise that there is a long history of Native American residence in eastern Long Island. The Montaukett and Shinnecock tribes were both active in this area. In the seventeenth century Chief Wyandanch of the Montaukett sold land to the English colonists, including what is now Gardiner’s Island, for “a large black dog, some powder and shot, and a few Dutch blankets.” The land from what is now Southampton to Hither Hills State Park went for “24 hatchets, 24 coats, 20 looking glasses and 100 muxes.” Unfortunately there are very few reminders of the presence of Native Americans in the Hamptons.

Thanksgiving in the Hamptons
Stephen Talkhouse, Montaukett tribe

For this Thanksgiving I wanted to reflect on all that which I, and A Votre Service!, are thankful for. First, my excellent staff that works so hard to care for everyone year-round. A special thank-you to all those who have helped make AVS successful, the handymen, subcontractors, real estate agents, concierges, event managers, bookkeepers, computer technicians, and website creators and writers. And of course AVS would not be what it is today without our loyal customers. Over the years we have been able to develop many rewarding professional and personal relationships. It has been a pleasure and a joy to serve you all, and for that we are truly grateful.

Amitiés,
Jocelyne
