Montauk
Montauk derives its name from the Montaukett, an Algonquian-speaking tribe who lived in the area. Located at the tip of the South Fork peninsula of Long Island, 118 miles east of Midtown Manhattan, Montauk is considered a beach resort, using its position at the tip of Long Island to promote itself as “The Living End” or “The Last Resort” and become one of the busiest tourist locations. The Montauk Point Light was the first lighthouse in New York State and is the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the United States.
Montauk is particularly famous for its fishing, claiming to have more world saltwater fishing records than any other port in the world. Located 20 miles off the Connecticut coast, it is home to the largest commercial and recreational fishing fleet in New York State.
Amagansett
Amagansett derives its name from the Montaukett for “place of good water,” after a water source near what today is Indian Wells beach. A Coast Guard station was constructed there during World War II and is now part of the East Hampton Town Marine Museum. The museum exhibits from the town’s maritime history include whaling relics and a cannon from the American Revolution ship HMS Culloden, which ran aground at Montauk.
Amagansett also includes a section of Further Lane, which is a block from the ocean, and has one of the biggest collections of mansions in East Hampton.
Montauk and Amagansett have drawn in summer crowds since their first settlements with beautiful ocean views and beachy vibe.
